5 Patriotic Cupcake Ideas for July 4th

For each idea, you'll find photos and tips on how to copy each idea at home... and all of them are totally simple!

You'll also find some ideas for patriotic cupcakes made with red velvet cake on this page!

1. Red, White, and Blue Circle Cupcakes

Cicle Fruit Cupcake
I love this awesomely easy Fourth of July cupcake recipe! It's fresh, fruity, easy to put together, and, of course, really pretty with all that red, white, and blue.

How to Make Them: To make these fun patriotic cupcakes at home, simply whip up your favorite cake recipe with your favorite white-colored frosting. Try:

Pick up a pint of blueberries and a pint of raspberries (you can also use strawberries). After frosting your cupcakes, decorate each one with a circle of blueberries, and place a raspberry in the center of each circle. These are some seriously simple, tasty and easy 4th of July cupcakes.

2. Cupcake Flag Display

Flag Display Cupcake for July 4thEver made an American flag cake for a 4th of July party? This concept is really similar, but even more fun. These cupcakes will delight both the kids and the adults at your party!

How to Make Them: Make up a big batch of cupcakes with your favorite kind of cake, and a big ol' batch of white frosting. (Or use a cake mix and pre-made frosting... who'll know?) Keep some of your frosting white, and dye some of it blue, and some of it red.

Depending on how many of these 4th of July cupcakes you've made, you can either do whole rows or red and white cupcakes to make the stripes in the flag (pictured at the top of this page), or you can stripe each cupcake with red AND white to make the stripes (pictured here). Color the rest of your cupcakes blue, and add star sprinkles if you can find them.

Then, on your buffet table, simply arrange your cupcakes as an American flag. Talk about patriotic cupcakes!

3. Red, White, and Blue Fireworks Cupcakes

July 4th Red White and Blue Cupcakes with Patriotic Fireworks FrostingThese 4th of July cupcakes are really neat looking, and amazingly easy! They're patriotic, and they look like fireworks... they're a lot of fun to make.

How to Make Them: Like the other cupcakes on this page, all you need is your favorite cake or cupcake recipe (any flavor is fine!) and a white-colored frosting (see above for some recipes to choose from). Divide your frosting into thirds, and leave one third white, dye one third blue, and dye one third red.

To make the fireworks, all you need is a special cake decorating tip. In the photo, a Wilson number 233 (made for piping frosting "grass" or "fur") was used. But you can also use a star tip, or lots of other textured tips. You can find these anywhere cake decorating supplies are sold.

Start with the middle, and make a circle of red with your 233 decorating tip in the middle of each cupcake. Do a circle of white around each with the same decorating tip. Finish it off with a circle of blue around the edge.

4. Patriotic Swirl Cupcakes

Red White and Blue Swirl MandM July Fourth CupcakesThese simple cupcakes are so cool looking, but so easy! All you need to accomplish this is an icing bag for cake decorating, and a large open tip on the bag.

How to Make Them: Make your favorite cake and white frosting recipes. Color half of your white frosting red, and leave the rest white. Carefully fill your icing bag half with red frosting, and half with white (horizontally-- both colors should swirl out evenly).

Pipe a pretty swirl of red and white frosting onto each cupcake. Top with some blue M&M's or some blueberries. These 4th of July cupcakes are simple, so play around and have fun with them!

5. Mixed Berry Patriotic Cupcakes

Mixed Berry Cupackes Red White Blue for the FOurth of JulyThese is the best patriotic cupcake recipe to use if you want to do something a bit healthier. Because while these are great with traditional cupcakes and frosting, this Fourth of July cupcake recipe is also great with low fat, low sugar cupcakes and, say, fat-free Cool Whip. A great idea if you want to offer a low calorie 4th of July dessert option.

How to Make Them: Whip up your favorite cupcake recipe, or use a low-fat, low calorie cupcake or muffin recipe. Frost with white frosting, or top prettily (a cake decorator's frosting bag with a tip helps) with your choice of Cool Whip or other non-dairy whipped topping. Top with a mix of red and blue berries. Serve immediately if using Cool Whip, or freeze until an hour or so before serving.

3 All American 4th of July Cupcake Ideas

Not all 4th of July cupcakes have strictly to be patriotic cupcakes... sometimes a simple All-American or summer theme can be just as much fun. The Fourth of July cupcake ideas below are cute, relatively simple, and are full of All-American fun!

1. Silly All-American Cheeseburger Cupcakes

All American Cheeseburger Cupcakes so cute Fourth of July Dessert
I love, love, love these little cupcakes. They're probably the most work intensive July 4th cupcake recipe on this page, but they're also worth it. Using a cake mix and colored frosting purchased in a tube will help cut some of the work down, though.

How to Make Them: These little cheeseburger cupcakes are made with white cake "buns," dark chocolate cake "burgers patties" and cheese and condiments made from colored frosting.

Make a double batch of your favorite white cake cupcake recipe and a single batch of dark chocolate cake. Color some white frosting red, green, and yellow, or buy pre-colored decorator's frosting in tubes.

Cut the tops from all of your white cupcakes, and from all of your chocolate cupcakes. These will be what you use-- you can freeze the "butts" of your cupcakes for use in something else later on, or make a trifle out of them!

To Assemble these Cupcakes: Place a white cupcake top "bun" on the bottom. Add some yellow frosting for cheese. Place your chocolate cupcake "burger" on top. Add red and green frostings for ketchup and lettuce. Top with another white cupcake "bun."

Brush the top "bun" of each cupcake with a touch of melted honey or maple syrup. Sprinkle with sesame seeds, and serve these really fun 4th of July cupcakes with a big smile.

2. Sweet Summer Watermelon Cupcakes

Fun Summer Watermelon Cupcakes RecipeThere's almost nothing more representative of that famous 4th of July picnic than watermelon! These watermelon cupcakes are summery, fun, and really easy to put together.

How to Make Them: I've got a recipe for watermelon cake right here on this page. Simply use the same recipe to make cupcakes, or, as pictured here, do the same thing but with green coloring/green tinted drink mix instead of red.

Pipe on your red frosting from the recipe, and sprinkle with mini chocolate chips. Voila! A fun and easy 4th of July cupcake recipe that your guests will ooh and aah over.

3. Brilliant Beach Cupcakes

Beach Summer Cupcakes Idea for teh Fourth of JUlyThese cupcakes are super summery and a ton of fun for a 4th of July party... or any summer party, really! And they're a lot easier to make than you might think.

How to Make Them: To make this easy Fourth of July cupcake recipe, simply whip up a batch of your favorite flavor of cupcake, and a batch of white frosting. Using a bright gel food coloring (it's more intensely pigmented), color your frosting blue.

Frost your cooked, cooled 4th of July cupcakes with your blue frosting. Grind graham crackers (or your favorite light brown cookie) in the food processor until the crumbs are quite fine. This is your "sand." Dip half of each cupcake in your graham cracker sand. Top with a paper cocktail umbrella, or a little American flag.
