5 Fun --and Instant!-- Ideas for Easy Fourth of July Snacks

1. Trail Mix

July 4th Cheese Platter Snack IDeaOne thing that immediately comes to mind when thinking about fun Fourth of July snacks is trail mix. This stuff is tasty, pretty healthy, and when you're ready to pack everyone up and go for fireworks - it can go with you in a food storage bag (no fuss, no muss). What's better than portable food?

How to Make it: What you combine in your tail mix is really up to you. Some traditional ingredients include nuts, raisins, dried fruit, pretzels, pita or Melba rounds, cheese crackers, and fruit snacks. You can add candy-coated chocolate bits too but this isn't recommended if it's going to be a really hot day. And it lowers the health factor a bit!

2. Mini Muffins

You can buy these, or make them yourself, but little muffins are always a nice snack to have around, and taste good any time of day.

How to Make them: Just pick your favorite recipe or recipes and go nuts! When I do this for an easy Fourth of July snack, I like to make a blueberry-raspberry muffin (they're red white and blue!), a chocolate muffin, and a plain corn muffin in case my guests don't want anything too sweet.

3. Fruits or Berries

If you're looking for ideas for easy Fourth of July snacks that won't weigh your guests down, this is a great idea for a healthy snack that can sit out all day without spoiling.

Putting it Together: When I do this, I either like to do cut fruit (like the patriotic "fruit sparklers" platter pictured below) with a fruit dip, or simply leave out handfuls of berries. Blueberries mixes with raspberries and strawberries are really festive for the Fourth.

You might also want to try these patriotic chocolate-covered strawberries. They're red, white, and blue!

4. Cheese and Crackers

Cheese is always one of the most popular items at any party buffet table, and is the perfect easy Fourth of July snack idea.

Putting it Together: With this fun Fourth of July snack, you can choose how you want to do it. You can either put together a simple cheese and cracker tray (or buy one pre-assembled at the store), or step it up a notch and make your cheese tray something special. Looking for a gourmet touch? The following cheese tray/snack recipes are great:

5. Dips, of Course!

Dips are probably the perfect finger food. And that's exactly what you're looking for in your easy Fourth of July snacks, right? Dips can be served with veggies for a healthier touch, with chips, with crackers, with crisp pitas... you name it!

Putting it Together: Of course, what you use as a dipper will depend completely on the dip you make! Check below for some dip recipe ideas ranging from very simple, to fancy-ish and full of flavor:

July 4th Edible Pretzel Sparklers Snack

Sparklers Fun Snack IDea for the Fourth of July
As far as easy Fourth of July snacks go, making edible sparkers is always fun... especially for any kiddos at your party!

You don't need a lot of skill for this fun 4th of July snack... just some pretzel rods and white chocolate. This recipe comes together in no time at all, and is a lot of fun to eat. If you can find edible glitter, it works great. Otherwise, regular sprinkles (as pictured here) work fine, too!

Ingredients:
20 long pretzel rods
1 C. white chocolate chips
Red/white/blue sprinkles or star-shaped sprinkles

Instructions: 1. Melt your chocolate slowly either in the microwave or over a double boiler.

2. When it's smooth, dip your pretzels halfway down.

3. Turn the pretzels into a cup (dry end down) so you can coat the chocolate with sprinkles before the chocolate hardens.

4. That's it! Chill for a short time before serving (and leave any extra in the refrigerator for refills).

Red White and Blue Fruit "Sparklers" Recipe

Fourth of July Patriot Fruit Platter Snack Recipe

A fruity alternative to the pretzel sparklers recipe above? Use fruit on skewers to make this easy Fourth of July snack instead. Arrange into a patriotic platter as pictured, or poke pointed-end-down into a watermelon so people can just grab and eat-- either way, it's pretty as well as easy!

Ingredients:
Slices of banana (or perhaps musk melon) for the "white" element
Cherries or strawberries for your "red" layer
Blueberries (or pears soaked in lemon soda with blue food coloring)

Instructions: 1. Clean, cut, and prepare your fruit.

2. All that's left to do is stack and serve.

Patriotic Gelatin Cups July 4th Recipe

Another cool, easy treat you can make for a 4th of July party is gelatin cups. You can choose red and blue colored types and set them up in small paper cups so you have single-serve sizes. Alternatively you can sometimes find covered plastic cups at party stores. The cover gives you a way to label the gelatin. You'll need a small cooler in which to keep these cold.

Or... Jello Shots! For the adults, you can swap out the cold water for alcohol (match the flavor of the alcohol to the gelatin, or use plain vodka). For example, match strawberry (red) with Midori, or Berry Blue with Blue Curacao. Warning: these little shots can pack a wallop because you don't really taste the alcohol.

There's always room for this light and easy Fourth of July snack!

"Choose Your Own" Homemade Potato Chips

You'd be hard pressed to go to any 4th of July event and not see bags of potato chips-- they've always been THE easy Fourth of July snack that everybody has on hand. Rather than buy them, however, you can make these at home in a variety of ways very inexpensively... and they're a lot more fun than the regular store-bought kind. Homemade chips are always special!

Homemade Sweet Potato Chips Recipe

Sweet Potato Chips fun Picnic Snack Idea Homemade Recipe
These easy Fourth of July snacks get prepared using sweet potatoes or yams. Note that one good-sized tuber makes enough chips for 2-3 people easily.

These are wonderful made with plain salt... but you can also play around with them! Use a mix of salt and pepper, salt, sugar, and cinnamon, or for a fiery chip coat with chipotle powder and honey powder. Or make a bunch of different ones, just for fun.

Serves about 8.

Ingredients:
3 large sweet potatoes
Oil for frying
Salt or other chosen seasoning

Instructions: 1. Slice your yams or sweet potatoes very thinly, putting the slices in water while you're cutting the rest of the potato. Dry them thoroughly before cooking.

2. Next, deep-fry the chips at 375 degrees in vegetable oil (you can use a large pot with vegetable oil for this) about 3 minutes, til golden brown.

3. Scoop out onto paper towels to drain. Sprinkle with salt or the seasoning mix of your choice.

Patriotic Potatoes Snack Recipe Idea

Homemade Fried Potato Chips Fun Easy Snack IdeaPotato chips are one of my favorite easy Fourth of July snacks... and this recipe makes 'em in red, white, and blue! Maybe you didn't know you could do the colors of the flag with potato chips... But you can! While the white peel will turn brown and the red will, too, the idea for these chips is a ton of fun.

If blue potatoes are hard to come by, or you just want to keep things simple, just make these with white or red potatoes... the flavor is the same and they're still a ton of fun. Yukon Gold and Idaho are both great for this.

Ingredients:
2 each lg. red, white, and blue-skinned potatoes (or 6 potatoes)
Vegetable oil for frying
Seasoning of your choice (see below for options)

Instructions: 1. Wash the skin well before slicing very thin.

2. Soak in water about 30 minutes. Dry thoroughly

3. Fry in 375 degree oil until brown. Scoop onto paper towels. Season as desired.

For this easy Fourth of July snack idea, you can get creative with your seasonings! How about:

  • Parmesan, cracked black pepper, and sea salt
  • Vinegar powder and onion salt
  • Garlic salt and smoky paprika
  • Your favorite barbecue rub

If you're not serving your chips immediately, make sure they cool completely, and then bundle them up in an airtight food storage bag. They keep okay for about two days.

At the end of the day, having these easy Fourth of July snacks handy will be wonderful. You can nibble while waiting for dinner or the fireworks, and snack while talking to friends. Enjoy!
