8 Fabulous Graduation Cake Decorating Ideas with Photos

Here, I plan to go over a bunch of different creative ideas for decorating graduation cakes (or find some great ideas for decorating graduation cupcakes here!). Why choose a whole cake? Whole cakes are generally a bit more difficult than cupcakes for a graduation, but they also --when beautifully decorated-- have more of an "oomph" factor. Even this easy homemade graduation cakes!

Ready for some awesome pics of graduation cake decorations? Read on!

1. The "Clean Slate" or Chalkboard Graduation Cake

Graduation Cake Decoration Idea with a Chalkboard or Slate ThemeI love this graduation cake decorating idea because, while it seems very very simple at first glance, it's an elegant look that you can easily achieve at home with a shiny, dark-chocolate frosting.

I also like that, if you want it to be, this idea for a creative graduation cake can be pretty thematic. When you graduate college or high school, you're starting fresh, starting new. This "blank slate" of a cake (or you could call it a chalkboard cake, which is also fun and thematic!) is the perfect way to symbolize that. The outside of the cake, in this case, is made from lady fingers, which create a perfect "frame" for your slate or chalkboard.

2. Mini Grad Caps Sheet Cake

Graduation Sheet Cake Decorated with Peanut Butter Cup Caps
With this fun graduation cake idea, everybody gets a slice of the best part: the Reese's peanut butter cup graduation cap (recipe here)!

Arranging the cake this way also makes for a super cute presentation: on first glance, it looks like bunch of tiny graduates are sitting in the cake, waiting to get their diplomas. Really cute! You can make the cake as pictured, with a mini cake in the corner with a larger graduation cap (the one here is made from fondant, but you could also use a non-edible decorative one), or you can cover the whole cake with graduation caps.

Just a note, the mini grad caps used on this graduation cake decorating idea are made with mini M&M's as toppers... when you make your own, be sure to use your grad's school colors!

3. Sporty Graduation Cake

High School Graduation Cake with Sports Goft ThemeWas your graduate really into sports during his or her school career? Then celebrate that with this sports themed graduation cake idea!

The cake pictured is a simple white sheet cake with non-edible golf balls and bucket.... it looks really fun and cool, and because the decorations are non-edible, requires almost no cake decorating skills-- this is one of those graduation cake decorating ideas that anybody can do at home!

You can also achieve the same effect with little basketballs, baseballs, or, a sports shaped cake pan ( like this football cake pan). Or get ambitious and create your sports theme and make your graduation cake decorations with real frosting.

4. School Mascot Cake

Simle Green Paw Graduation Cake Decorated with School MascotDepending on how simple or complex your graduate's school mascot is, using the mascot can be a really simple way to decorate a graduation cake at home, and achieve the maximum effect.

The big cat paw pictured here is made of fondant, but with a careful hand you could achieve the same effect with a bit of decorator's frosting and lots of food coloring.

Want to do a simpler version of this same idea? Simply decorate the cake with frosting shapes (circles, stars, stripes, etc.) in your graduate's school colors.

5. Stars and Celebration Cake

Creative Graduation Cake with Star Cake Pan and Star Cookies
This is one of those graduation cake decorating ideas that gives you lots of effect for relatively little work.

The cake here has a round base, with a top layer made using a star shaped cake pan. The base is one color, and the star another. Stuck into the top of the cake are painted cardboard cutouts with, in this case, the names of the different graduates who will be celebrating together.

There are lots of options for making this graduation cake decoration idea your own. You can use star-shaped sugar cookies on sticks instead of paper cut-outs. You can use your graduate's school colors. You can make the cookies/cut-outs display a message from the graduate's family... whatever you want. Have fun with it!

6. Beachy Graduation Cake with Cookies

Graduation Cake with a Beach Theme and Cookie Decorations
Since graduation comes right before summertime, a beach theme makes for the perfect graduation cake decorating idea!

The cake here looks impressive and complicated, but it's actually pretty simple! The cake is a simple white cake with tan frosting (caramel or peanut butter frosting are good choices to achieve this color), coated in finely ground graham cracker crumbs for "sand."

The rest of the cake is decorated in cut-out cookies in the grad's school colors. This is one of those graduation cake decorating ideas with lots of oomph... but that anybody with a little time and patience can do it at home.

7. Future Career Graduation Cake

A Career Themed Graduation Cake Trade School etc.Are you the artistic type? If you can pick up a pen and draw, you may be able to get the same effect with your graduation cake decoration. You can celebrate your graduate's future career with a career-themed graduation cake!

The cake here was created for somebody going on to be a nurse. Some things, like the diploma and the pill bottle, were made of fondant. But other decorations were simply frosted on! You can get a similar effect just with frosting, or you can buy decorative non-edible items to use on the cake, as well... just because you can't eat it doesn't mean you can't decorate with it!

8. Creative Graduation Cookie Cake

Just because you call it a cake doesn't mean it has to be a cake! Instead, make a graduation cookie cake!

This graduation cookie cake is just a giiiiiant chocolate chip cookie.... but decorated with cake decorators' frosting! You can make your own giant cookie at home, do a bunch of little cookies, or buy a giant cookie and decorate it yourself.

And feel free to think outside the box! You can also decorate your grad's favorite pies, brownies, cheesecakes, or dessert bars for a graduation party. Just because you're celebrating doesn't mean it HAS to be cake!
