Turkey Cooking Time for Breast and Extra Drumsticks?

by Loy
(Hopkins, MN )

I have a frozen, 3 lb. Butterball turkey breast w/gravy packet. Plan to thaw it in fridge but would like to add 2 each fresh drumsticks and thighs to the pan.

Do I need liquid?? Brown dark meat first??? Frozen bag says roast 1 1/2 hrs to 2 hrs at 325, uncovered. Will it all be done together?

Roasting a 3 lb Turkey Breast with Drumsticks
by: Karen from DDP

You're in luck! At 325 degrees, a 3-pound bone-in turkey breast and an average sized turkey drumstick should cook in about the same amount of time-- probably because one is white meat, and the other, while smaller, is dark.

Season well with salt and pepper, or whatever seasonings you like. You can add liquid to the pan or not-- your choice. If you use a roasting pan with a rack, add liquid to the bottom to keep the drippings from burning, and to make a fabulous gravy afterward. But be careful that any liquid you add doesn't touch the turkey itself-- if you're looking for a crispy, golden finish any liquid touching the turkey will ruin that.

As for browning, it's not a bad idea to give the top of the turkey breast and the drumsticks a quick browning in a bit of oil in a skillet. But if you don't feel like it, it's not really necessary-- as long as you're roasting them and they're not in liquid, they shouldn't need to be sealed with a browning before cooking.

Hope that helps! Feel free to write back if you have any more questions!
